Select Board Calls Special Town Meeting for June 16 Amid Service-Hour Cuts

A Special Town Meeting called by the Select Board for Tuesday, June 16, lands the same week that both Town Hall and the public library announce reduced hours taking effect July 1 — a pair of budget-driven changes that will affect residents' day-to-day access to town services.

TOWN HALL

The Select Board has called a Special Town Meeting for Tuesday evening, June 16; a reminder is posted on the town homepage for residents who may not yet have it on their calendars. The Finance Committee also has an agenda posted for the same night.

Separately, Town Hall and the Town Annex will move to reduced hours of operation beginning July 1. Full details are posted on the town's website at townofrutland.org.

The town is also asking residents to step up for two volunteer positions. A newly formed ADA Commission is seeking founding members, and the Planning Board has an open associate member seat. Both recruitment notices are on the town site. Additionally, an official statement on 2026 Fourth of July festivities is posted; the town is asking residents to read it before making holiday plans.

COMMUNITY & ARTS

The Rutland Free Public Library will cut back its schedule starting July 1, citing budget restrictions. Under the new hours, the library will be open Tuesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday noon to 8 p.m., and Friday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday hours will shift to 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., though the library is closed Saturdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day as usual. The changes represent a notable reduction from current hours — Tuesday through Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday until 4 p.m. — with Thursday morning access gone entirely under the new schedule and Friday closing three hours earlier. Questions can be directed to Library Director Kerry Remington at kerry@rutlandlibrary.org or 508-886-4108.
